Automated Sustainability Reporting Software: Six Jobs to Test

Socious

Workiva surveyed more than 2,200 people involved in ESG reporting. Eighty-three percent named accurate data collection as a top challenge. That finding belongs at the start of a software demonstration. A faster final paragraph saves little when the input still sits in an email attachment with no owner.

Use one sample number through the whole demonstration. Six tests will show where a product keeps control and where staff return to spreadsheets.

Import a difficult source file

Give the vendor an untidy spreadsheet and a PDF invoice. Add one corrected value. Do not use the vendor’s prepared template.

The imported record should retain the original file and its reporting period. It should also show the unit, legal entity and source owner. Check the corrected value: the old record should remain visible in the history.

A number stripped of this context is not ready for disclosure. Someone will have to reconstruct the context later, usually near the filing deadline.

Plant a known error

Change an electricity value or remove one month. The system should flag the exception and send it to a named owner. That person can then correct the value or approve it with an explanation.

AI can identify anomalies and classify documents. It should not silently replace the value. An assurer needs the company’s decision and the record behind it.

Follow one fact across three standards

European and Japanese operations can put the same group under ESRS, Japan’s SSBJ standards and ISSB-based rules. These regimes share concepts, especially around climate reporting. Their disclosure requirements still differ.

Ask the vendor to use the imported fact in every applicable disclosure. The screen should keep one common source and show the extra context required by each standard. A source correction should flow to the mapped disclosures without erasing their separate review status.

This test matters for Japanese groups with European operations. Our AI reporting software guide covers the wider procurement process. The SSBJ roadmap covers Japan’s timetable.

Click a draft figure and work backwards

Open one figure in the draft report. Follow it back to the source. The path should include any material transformation and the approval record. Earlier versions should remain available.

If the vendor needs a separate spreadsheet to explain the figure, the evidence trail sits outside the product. That gap will return during assurance.

Verifiable credentials can record what was verified and identify the verifier. They do not repair weak source data. Socious Verify therefore comes after the reporting workflow as an independent credential layer.

Change the number after approval

Late changes expose weak workflows quickly. Edit a source value after the disclosure has been approved. The affected review should reopen and the responsible person should receive a notification. Unrelated sections should stay untouched.

The screen should distinguish the source owner from the final reviewer. Sustainability data crosses several functions, so this status view replaces rounds of progress-check emails.

Generate a draft with missing evidence

Leave one record incomplete and run report generation. A dependable product exposes the gap or leaves the section open. It does not invent a policy or result to complete the prose.

Now change an approved source value. The affected sentence should return for review. A specialist can then focus on the changed passage and open its evidence directly.

Two products may both advertise an audit trail and AI drafting. Running these actions shows whether those features share one controlled record.

Materiality and reporting boundaries require accountable judgment. Estimates and forward plans do too. Software earns its place by removing repeated handling while keeping those decisions visible.

Socious Report accepts company data once and maps it across CSRD, SSBJ and ISSB. It creates an AI-drafted report from that record while preserving the audit trail. Socious Verify adds an independent credential when the reporting record is ready.

Start with the free CSRD readiness check or SSBJ readiness check. The result helps locate the handoff that still happens outside a controlled process.
